Nutrition month ends, health workers feted
With the theme, “Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life,” outstanding health and nutrition workers were honored during the 43rd nutrition month culminating program last Friday at the Baguio Convention Center.
For the outstanding nutrition scholars, Imelda Dagupon of Imelda Village topped the list, with Margarita Zapanta of Upper Quezon Hill, Monica Sicat of City Camp Proper, Joan Camacho of Victoria Village, Purita Perez of MRR Queen of Peace, Teresita Malateo of West Quirino Hill, Ma. Louisa Cawed of Guisad Central and Eusebia Calderon of Pinsao proper ranked up to the 8th place.]
For the best performing barangay nutrition action officer, Bridget Guilod of Lower Quirino Hill, Remedios Canite of Poliwes, Rosario Mancio of Sto. Tomas Proper, Rosemarie Talledo of Upper Quezon Hill, Melita Militante of Military Cut-off, Bernadette Quicho of Lourdes proper, Flordeliza Comising of Guisad Central and Juliet Wakit of West Quirino Hill, and Miralyn Quiamco of Andres Bonifacio barangays were ranked, with a tie for the 7th place.
The City Nutrition Evaluation Teams (CNET) of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Baguio Office head Evelyn Trinidad as chair, City Nutrition Action Officer Angelita Sabado and Gerald Alejo, Jr. of Philippine Red Cross (PRC) office; and DILG officer Ameurfina Lapastora as chair, Alberto Tomas of the Special Services Division, City Mayor’s Office and Bernadette Brillantes of the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) conducted the assessment of the awardees.
The city’s Best Implemented Barangay Nutrition Program had Imelda Village, represented by Punong Barangay Arturo Rapelo, Jr. as first in rank. Upper Quezon Hill, represented by PB Dinah Campos is in second place; while City Camp Proper, represented by PB Aurora Abellera and Lower Quirino Hill, represented by PBVan Oliver Dicang tied for the third place.
Ranked as fourth to 10 place with a tie for the 7th place and represented by their respective Punong Barangays are: MRR Queen of Peace, by PB Catherine Quinones; Andres Bonifacio, PB Wilbert Ponce; Victoria Village; Poliwes, PB Robert Galong and Upper General Luna, PB Julita Sagun; Middle Quezon Hill, PB Edita Ibarra; Brookspoint, Douglas Sial; and, Outlook Drive, PB Miguel Arnaiz.
Service awardees for 20, 15, 10 and 5 years for Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Barangay Nutrition Action Officers were also honored, with plaques and certificates.
During the program, Mayor Mauricio Domogan as one of the speakers, urged Baguio residents to push for a healthier lifestyle through proper diet, exercise and positive attitude towards life in general. A healthy body could be achieved through learning from what is modeled by healthy older citizens, and what experts would advise, he said.
Dr. Juvy Lyn Degsi-Bitog a hepato-gastroenterologist also shared life principles about healthy habits to maintain a healthy body. She also advocated health education promotion, healthy food choices, modeling through family activities, balanced and natural health products; and health programs.
Nutrition month was marked with barangay activities: feeding programs and cooking contests; slogan, poster contests and quiz bees; seeds/seedling distribution and organic garden contests; healthy babies and mothers, pre-school children; clean up drive and tree planting, search for healthy pregnant women contest and longest breastfeeding mother, multivitamins distribution, mini-trade fair; blood-letting; dental mission, biggest weight lose, search for healthiest lolo and lola, and circumcision operations.
The activities were all focused on healthy diet awareness to prevent malnutrition, reduction of overweight, obesity and non-communicable diseases, healthy food choices, available food options and support for national and local legislators’ polices for healthy diets. - juliegfianza
